Mandrake distr.

Post by tc » Fri, 19 Feb 1999 04:00:00

HI!

I'd like to know what 100% RedHat compatibility as claimed by Mandrake
means and what the experiences of other users of that dist. are.

Do I go right in assuming, that - should I decide to go RedHat - I can
simply update using RedHat distr?

What is the difference between the GPL RedHat and the "normal" one
(there has to be one, since there is only one CD in the GPL version)?

TIA

100% compat means, what software works on redhat or is made for redhat will
work on Mandrake.  I have Mandrake 5.2 and Love it, 10 times easier to use
xwindows, and had no problems with the install.  Had to trip and tweek
Redhat 5.2 with xwindows every step of the way.  The diff between GPL and
"normal" is There isn't.  Both have redhat on 1 cd, however "normal" also
has another cd with the redhat source codes (for programmers) and a 3rd cd
with other nice to have and demo software on it.

As a matter of fact Mandrake _is_ RedHat's distribution plus KDE and
  and a few other toys.

One way or the other should work, the only thing that you might have
to
do is get KDE's update RPMS ditectly at kde.org. But it seems likely
that RedHat will soon include KDE in it's own distributions.

 The differences are:

 - A CD containing the complete sources, which, anyway are available
online, should you need those. (the kernel sources, however, are
   included in both distributions),

 - A "bonus" CD containing various demoware of commercial applications
   (without sources ;-),

 - one month free e-mail installation support.

 Best regards
