Boot problem on Plato with large IDE/small IDE/CD-ROM

I have been having troubles getting Linux installed.  Hopefully someone has
some pointers for me.

My setup:
Intel Plato motherboard w/16 MB RAM (4x4)
ATI Graphics Xpression (Mach64)(PCI)
Soundblaster 16 (ISA)
USRobotics Sportster 28.8 (ISA)

Two IDE controllers are soldered on the motherboard:

        PCI:   Master:  Western Digital 31000H (CHS=2100,16,63) (/dev/hda?)
             Slave:  Western Digital 2340H  (CHS=1010,12,55) (/dev/hdb?)

     ISA:   Master:  Sony 55E CDROM (/dev/hdc?)

Floppy controller:
    All in one 3.5 & 5.25 Cannon floppy

I would like to leave the WD31000H completely as a DOS/Windoze disk for the
time being, and have the WD2340H as a completely Linux disk.

The problem:

During the device probing part of the boot I see the following errors:
(I boot with ramdisk hd=2100,16,63 hd=1010,12,55)

ide0: hda: cyls=2100,heads=16,secs=63
ide0: hdb: cyls=1010,heads=12,secs=55
....
hda: WDC AC31000H, 1033MB w/128kb cache, LBA, CHS=2100/16/63, MaxMult=16
hdb: non-IDE device, chs=1010/12/55
hdc: WDC AC2340H, 325MB w/128kb cache, CHS=1010/12/55, MaxMult=16
hdd: CD-ROM CDU55E, ATAPI, CDROM Drive
....
Partition check:
   hda: disabled multiple mode
   hda: hda1
hdb: DRDY error: status=0x00{}
hdb: DRDY error: status=0x00{}
hdb: DRDY error: status=0x00{}
hdb: DRDY error: status=0x00{}
ide0: do_ide_reset: success
hdb: DRDY error: status=0x00{}
hdb: DRDY error: status=0x00{}
hdb: DRDY error: status=0x00{}
hdb: DRDY error: status=0x00{}
ide0: do_ide_reset: success
hdb: DRDY error: status=0x00{}
end_request: I/O error, dev 0340, sector 0
hdb: unexpected_intr: status=0x00{}
   unable to read partition table of device 0340
   hdc: disabled multiple mode
   hdc:
....

So it appears Linux is getting confused with my large drive.

I have also booted all the way to the root prompt, and fdisked the first
drive.  I saw lots of errors, so I changed the cylinders and heads to
525 and 64, which removed the errors when I view the partition table in
fdisk, but I still have the above boot troubles, and I cannot fdisk
/dev/hdb or /dev/hdc.  During the boot, I see that ide0's interrupt is
at 14, and ide1's interrupt is at 15 if that is any sort of clue.

So, as you can see, I am stuck before I even get out of the starting gate.
Hopefully once I get this fixed, the rest of the installation will go as
smoothly as it did on my old computer.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

1. Problems with 2nd IDE i/f and IDE CD-ROM on Compaq Presario CDS 972

Hello...I have a Compaq Presario CDS 972, with two IDE hard drives, and a IDE
CD-ROM drive...I have the two HD's hooked up to the first IDE interface.  No
problem with that.  However, I tried to hook my IDE CD-ROM (I beleive it's a
Mitsumi) to the 2nd IDE interface...neither DOS nor Linux recognizes that it's
even there.  Also, when I boot linux, I see:

ide0: primary interface on irq 14

But nothing about ide1.  How can I enable the second IDE interface?

Thanks in advance!
