Changing Default X Color Depth w/3DFX

Changing Default X Color Depth w/3DFX

Post by colde.. » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I just installed RH 6.1 and I have a 3DFX Voodoo3 3000. I believe I have
Xfree86 3.3.5, and during the install I think it identified my card
correctly and everything, and in the different color depths I selected
all the possible resolutions, but now by default when X starts, I get
high resolution (I believe I'm at 1280x1024) but I'm in 256 colors. I
have X Logon turned on, so how can I force it to go into 16-bit color
mode on startup (startx -- -bpp 16)? Thanks.

'man XF86Config', look for "DefaultColorDepth".

1. Changing default color depth.

I am trying to get to 16-bit or 24-bit color in XWindows.  I tried
commenting out the 8-bit screen section in the XF86Config file, and on
startup it said it could not find the 8-bit color display and something
about that being the default mode.  How can I change the default mode to
16 or 24 bits?  Is there a file somewhere I missed?
