LILO: First boot sector doesn't have a valid LILO signature

Is there a way to make LILO work?

Ok, I took Partition Magic 4.0, hdb6(linux), hdb7(fat16) and made them a
one single linux-partition hdb6. Everything went ok, except some
superblocks where missing according to redhat-rescue-disk-e2fsck, which
fixed them allright. Then, picked up rescue disks from Red Hat 5.2,
booted, mounted hdb6 to /foo and made nesessary path/misc. modifications
to lilo.conf and fstab. Entered
'lilo -C /foo/etc/lilo.conf' and ... an error messages appeared. Don't
know how to handle than one... I have used OS/2 Boot Manager (so my lilo
was in hdb6) which is hda1, but I'll be clad to get that darn lilo even
in MBR.

1. lilo: Fatal: First sector of /dev/hda1 doesn't have a valid boot signature

Hi all,

I just got a pre-installed Red Hat box from Dell, running kernel
2.4.7. I compiled the newest kernel, added an entry in /etc/lilo.conf
and tried to run lilo, with these results:

Added linux2417 *
Added linux
Added linux-up
Fatal: First sector of /dev/hda1 doesn't have a valid boot signature

The partition table looks like this:

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2434 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

   Device Boot    Start       End    Blocks   Id  System
/dev/hda1             1       327   2626596   83  Linux
/dev/hda2           328       333     48195   83  Linux
/dev/hda3           334      1647  10554705   83  Linux
/dev/hda4          1648      2434   6321577+   f  Win95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/hda5          1648      1778   1052226   82  Linux swap
/dev/hda6          1779      2434   5269288+  83  Linux

...and my /etc/lilo.conf is this:

prompt
timeout=50
default=linux2417
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
message=/boot/message
linear

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.17smp
        label=linux2417
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.17smp.img
        read-only
        root=/dev/hda6

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.7-10smp
        label=linux
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.7-10smp.img
        read-only
        root=/dev/hda6

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.7-10
        label=linux-up
        initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.7-10.img
        read-only
        root=/dev/hda6

other=/dev/hda1
        optional
        label=DOS

Any ideas what the problem might be ? I am clueless
unfortunately...

Thanx in advance, Joerg.
