OPTi 16 Sound Card Configuration under RH5.2 & kernel 2.2.12

OPTi 16 Sound Card Configuration under RH5.2 & kernel 2.2.12

hello everyone

i'm having a problem with configuring a OPTi 16 sound card working under RH 5.2
& the 2.2.12 kernel.

I've compiled all of the OSS modules and I've tried using sndconfig, but
nothing seems to be working.

The card advertises itself as a SoundBlaster compatible, but just about every
card does that.  It is a PNP ISA card, and the BIOS does recognize the card at
boot time.  I've tried pnpdump and isapnp, but they haven't helped at all.

I'm running this on a pentium 166 MB from asus.  The machine has 48 megs of
ram, and the sound card is the only ISA card.  The other two cards are a
network card and my video card.

anybody had any success getting this card to work under linux?

thanks,

dennis

OPTi 16 Sound Card Configuration under RH5.2 & kernel 2.2.12

I've had partial success : I use isapnp to set up the IRQs/IOaddresses, because
sndconfig doesn't work with it. Basically, you need isapnp to return "enabled
OK"
for all the logical devices on the board, then load the appropriate modules. I
still haven't got midi to work though. Here is what I have in /etc/conf.modules:

alias sound-slot-0 sound
alias sound-service-0-3 midi    # probably wrong!

alias sound ad1848      # actually the chip is ad1845
options ad1848 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0
pre-install sound insmod sound dmabuf=1
alias midi opl3         # module won't load!
options opl3 io=0x388

modprobe sound and see what happens
Like I say, I still haven't got midi to work, I may have the wrong
module entirely.

1. Upgrading kernel 2.2.12 to kernel 2.2.16, keeping same options

Hi,
I was told that kernel 2.2.16 is more secure than 2.2.12, which
was part of my Redhat 6.1 distribution.
I would like to upgrade in a way that all the options that were
built into the origional kernel that came with Redhat 6.1
remains the same. I don't know what those options are?
    How to accomplish the task?

                                                        Thanks
