Yipes.  Nice to know that the defense of this nation depends on such
reliable systems...

Anyone ever hear about this from another source? Not that I don't believe
the worst of NT, but I couldn't find any independent confirmation on this
story except for a generic mention of the Navy and trouble with M$ OS's on
the Wired site. No mention of the Yorktown at all. Can we trust this report?

Only thing I've seen is other places where they link to this story.  It
seems reasonably legitimate, though I can't point to anything for or
against accepting it.

Would you like to ride a submarine that depended on NT?

Yes - the story was published in ?Network news or some similar weekly
newspaper in the UK.

My CEO, who used to be in the army, gave me a mouthful when our NT system
went down and made some comment about - what would we do if this was mission
critical...

it was with great pleasure that i thrust that article under his nose.

The story was published in the (usually) freebie U.S. weekly magazine,
Government Computer News, about two weeks ago. I can't remember the exact
issue but I certainly can post a copy of the article if anyone wants it.

Not if it behaves the way the _Yorktown_ is reported to have failed. For
a CG-47 class ship to be off-line for 2+ hours is unacceptable. Period.
They, their sailors, and the ships they protect (and their sailors) are
too damn valuable to be vulnerable that long.

While not dealing specifically with the USS Yorktown incident, the
following article is relevant.

http://www.usni.org/Proceedings/Articles98/PROjohns.htm
'Military weapon systems are enterprise systems that have large numbers
of users and require high levels of security and reliability. At
present, these capabilities are available in UNIX-based systems but not
in Windows 95 or Windows NT.'

http://www.zdnet.com/pccomp/features/fea0797/nt/sub4.html
'NT is certifiably secure only without any network connections.'

I can't coerse NT to behave in my home.  It keeps soiling the carpet.
How is it that we seem to rely on things that are inherently unstable?
The only thing my NT is good for is surfing for entertainment,  and
quicken.  Untill I become more at home with linux and linux apps I gotta
bend over for Bill.............

Government Computer News is a very reputable source; given that the bulk
of their audience is people in the government or at government contractors,
I imagine they have to be (for legal reasons) quite careful about
publishing anything negative.

Are there any examples of Linux being used in real time, mission
critical situations? there are lots of general purpose servers,
simulations etc, and while I've read a few medical uses, are there any
uses we could point to and say Linux works, NT sucks - see?
