PPP: almost there, need help

Post by Dennis Corb » Sun, 18 Apr 1999 04:00:00

When I dial my ISP, it seems I am getting a connection.  When I bring up
Lynx to browse, it cannot find any locations.  I turned on debug in pppd
and watched the messages file.

These are the last few messages I get in the message file:

localhost pppd[1566] Serial connection established
localhost pppd[1566] Using interface ppp0
localhost pppd[1566] Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
localhost pppd[1566] local IP address 209.208.231.124
localhost pppd[1566] remote IP address 209.208.231.26
localhost kernel: IPX "followed by some stuff about IPX"
localhost kernel: Appletalk "followed by some stuff about appletalk"
localhost pppd[1566]: CCP: timeout sending Config-Requests

Any help or tips would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

2 thoughts:
1) Do you have TCP/IP networking compiled in the kernel?
2) Do you have some Name Servers (DNS) set up in your /etc/resolv.conf?

PPP: almost there, need help

ok when you dial up an ISP you need to specify their DNS IP address.  I dont
know if you did this yet.  If you didnt i think thats the problem.  To fix you
need to call ISP and ask them for their DNS addresses and they should tell you.
Then go to linuxconf and put them in the DNS section ( i dont recall exact
title cause im not in linux right now but it is not the same place as the ppp
connection.)

hope this helped

And why are you enabling IPX and Appletalk over the link?
When you recompile turn those off unless you need them.
