Hi there,
I just encountered a serious problem booting linux (Slakware, kernel 1.2.9)
via LILO on i486 with an AMI BIOS from 92 that doesn't support LBA for disks
The situation is that I created all linux partitions (root, /usr, /swap)Quote:> 1GB.
beyond the 504 MB border. Bringing up the system from a boot floppy worked
fine.
However I tried to install LILO in the MBR giving me the choice to boot DOS,
OS/2 or linux.
LILO remarked that I was trying to acess cylinders > 1024 but it ended up
with the message 'linux added' (and the other OS too, of course).
When I rebooted the system immediately after LILOs blank screen there appears
LILOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Well, it seems that the MBR is wrecked which is not really a big problem. My question is, wether this problem may be due to the fact that even the root Thanx for your help... Michael --
and so on.
partition resides on a cylinder > 1024. Or in other words, will I be able to
boot the system via LILO in the MBR when I create a tiny root partition below
cyl. 1024 leaving the /usr and /swap partitions beyond cyl. 1024? Or is there
anything else which I forgot?
As booting from floppy worked, it seems that the acess to these partitions is
given, once the kernel is booted sucessfully (at least that's my imagination
of what happens ;).
