Q: LILO with disk 1GB and old BIOS

Hi there,

I just encountered a serious problem booting linux (Slakware, kernel 1.2.9)
via LILO on i486 with an AMI BIOS from 92 that doesn't support LBA for disks

Quote:> 1GB.

The situation is that I created all linux partitions (root, /usr, /swap)
beyond the 504 MB border. Bringing up the system from a boot floppy worked
fine.
However I tried to install LILO in the MBR giving me the choice to boot DOS,
OS/2 or linux.
LILO remarked that I was trying to acess cylinders > 1024 but it ended up
with the message 'linux added' (and the other OS too, of course).
When I rebooted the system immediately after LILOs blank screen there appears

LILOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....
and so on.

Well, it seems that the MBR is wrecked which is not really a big problem.

My question is, wether this problem may be due to the fact that even the root
partition resides on a cylinder > 1024. Or in other words, will I be able to
boot the system via LILO in the MBR when I create a tiny root partition below
cyl. 1024 leaving the /usr and /swap partitions beyond cyl. 1024? Or is there
anything else which I forgot?
As booting from floppy worked, it seems that the acess to these partitions is
given, once the kernel is booted sucessfully (at least that's my imagination
of what happens ;).

Thanx for your help...

Michael

Yes.  (Probably to all questions :-))

[Your swap partition is not called /swap.  What needs to be below 1024 is the
kernel image and the auxiliary files LILO uses, often found in /boot.]

1. LILO/disk >1024/old Bios

Hi,
I have a 1 GB harddrive  and would like to boot off the harddrive.
Currently, I am booting using a floppy drive, but i would prefer to boot off the
harddrive. Since I have an old BIOS, anything over 540 MB is not recognized
properly. I tried installing lilo, but it always fails. I also have to supply a SCSI controller command on bootup, since Linux fails to autodetect my Adaptec
1510 controller on bootup. What are my options, and what should my lilo.conf
file look like?

Is there any way to supply boot parameters on bootup using the floppy drive/
kernel?

Thanks for any help!
