ASUS makes a nice, fast and inexpensive PCI SCSI host adapter for
about $60-$75. Model number is SC200.
For cheap tape drives check out JEM: http://www.jemcomp.com
However, I was just at JEM's web page a minute ago and I see they
don't currently seem to have any deals on any tape drives. They
update their inventory fairly frequently, so perhaps by the time you
check them out they may have some.

1. Unix 3.2 and cpio under cron to SCSI tape drive
Greetings!
I have a problem regarding SCO Unix 3.2 and an internal Wangtek 5525ES
525Mb SCSI tape drive on a 486/66 PC using cpio, and I would be grateful
for any input on the situation. Here it is:
For a year after installation, nightly backups were performed auto-
matically using cron. cron would invoke a bourne shell script that would
construct a listing of files on the entire hard disk and then do a
cpio to the internal tape drive. The following is the script that cron
calls:
# /usr/lib/sysadmin/bscript
date >/tmp/bumsg
cd /
find . -print >/tmp/backlist
cpio -ocBdu </tmp/backlist >/dev/rct0 ||echo "PROBLEM WITH BACKUP">>/tmp/bumsg
echo "Backup Routine Complete">>/tmp/bumsg
This script worked fine for a year (and this script works fine for
many of our client sites), and then suddenly began freezing the system.
I found that the freeze was taking place at the point of the cpio command
in the script - the /tmp/backlist file was being created fine.
Manual backups using the same script operate just fine! Only when this
script is being run from cron is there a problem. There are no problems with
the tape drive when backups are run manually using this script or a straight
cpio command.
For a while, the freezing was sporadic, i.e., it would not freeze every
time cron ran the script. But now, the system freezes every time cron
invokes the script.
Because of the proper operation of the tape drive away from cron, we do
not suspect a hardware problem. But what about running this from cron
would cause the system to freeze? We are puzzled.
Any insight or troubleshooting you can suggest would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks!
