Just wondering if anyone out there is using the either of these cards with
RedHat 5.2 or xfree86 3.3.2.  On RH's compatibility list it says the

What I would really like to know is this : is there a difference between

with RH 5.2.  Any suggestions of other relatively cheap (around $50) video
cards that are agp and work with RH 5.2 (out of the box) would be really
appreciated.

Dan,

Just this afternoon I purchased the PCI version of the same card
for an older machine.

The AGP installed with Mach64 server as distributed on the RH CDROM.

I'll let you know if there I need to do anything unusual to get the
PCI card to work.

One hint, use "xf86config", not "Xconfigurator".

Save my email address in case you have problems and I will mail
you my config file.

Best
Ray

been able to get the MAch64 Server to run. All that works is the VGA driver.

Did you do anything special with the installation?  Could you forward me
your config file?

properly. The closest I've got so far is 800x600, 256 colors. Even then, though,
the screen is divided into 3 columns and flickers seriously.

If anyone else has got it working with this card, please let me know. I wonder if
RedHat 5.2 would make a difference...

I have *5.2*, X 3.3.3.1 and an All-In-Wonder (also with the Rage Pro
chipset) - works great.

Well I figured out my problem, this solution should fix alot of people's problem's
with ATI cards.

I was eventually able to figure out (via the XFree86 FAQ) that  if you have an ATI
card with TV output, you MUST DISCONNECT the cable from the TV out jack for it to
work. That's all I did, and now it works like a dream.

and All in Wonder Pro, and the 3D Xpression with PC2TV.

Hope this helps people: I was trying to get X working for 2 days before I figured
this out. I think I'm going to send an e-mail to the author of the Mach64 server
readme, to make sure this information gets included in there.

Is it an AGP card, or a PCI card?

Hi Brad I have it running on RH 5.1 under whatever X comes with Rh5.1....

Same card ATI Xpert 98 AGP 8 meg

Xconfiguator had a bit of trouble with the card ( couldn't detect the ram ) but
aside from that it works.... now I get the same problem as you the coloum divided
screen or I did until my monitor blew and was replaced ( dont worry it was quite an
old monitor and it wasn't the first to go and the first never ran linux so )

Anyways.... do this when you run startx

press:   crtl-alt-+     (if you press this again and again it will just cycle
through all possible resolutons and has the added benefit that it clears up the
divided column problem or it did for me... you can then use Xvidtune to adjust your
settings to permenantly correct this problem --I never did ).

Also to enable more than 256 colours you need to tell X to start using more like so

startx -- -bpp 16    ( or 8, 24, 32 --whichever you like )

Cheers

3.3.1 (I think)  will also work at 640x480 in 16bit color mode.  Though I don't
recall running it at 800x600 res at the same color depth.

I'm using  the same card under RedHat 5.2 and XFree
A few weeks ago it was RedHat 5.1.
RAM is not detected, but I haven't any problems.
You can simply run X86Setup :
# XF86Setup
and say "NO" when you will be asked "use or no existing configuration file?".
Also,  you may be asked "is this reconfiguration?" - say "NO".
Always say "No" :-)
After then, the session of configurator will be started and I'm sure that you'll have
640x480 screen without any problem
Choose in menu "card" (press the relevant button)
Don't probe anything
Choose Chip "Mach64", RAMDAC "Internal", don't choose any ClockChip
Press "8M" button for memory and don't forget to configure mouse, display and etc.
Now follow the on-screen instructions and save new config file.........
