XFree86 display magnified too much

Post by R. D. Dav » Fri, 13 Jun 1997 04:00:00

After firing up XFree86, what appears on the screen looks as though
I'm looking at a normal screen through a magnifying glass.  From what
I can tell, I've used the correct information for configuring the
monitor and the display card (I think!).  Any ideas as to what could
have been set up incorrectly to cause this?

Try hitting Ctrl/Alt/+ and Ctrl/Alt/-.
This will go through the resolutions configured in your XF86Config
file.

If you configured X to use a 1024x768 virtual desktop and
the resolutions are specified like this:
"640x480" "800x600" "1024x768", then the default resolution is
640x480 with a desktop of 1024x768.

If this is the case, just reverse the list of the configured
resolutions in such a way that 1024x768 becomes the default res.

Bernie.

Nothing incorrect, you're just seeing one of the multiple screens the
desktop has been divided into. If you don't like this, edit XF86Config
and change the "Virtual Screen" setting to the same as your resolution
(i.e., 800x600 or 1024x768); then you'll have everything on one
screen.

I'm a newbie but may have the answer to your problem:

Pressing Control-Alt-<Grey Plus> cycles through the display resolutions
your card is capable off

it sounds like you're looking at one corner of a virtual desktop
if you're using XFree-86 (I don't know about anything else) your
config file defines which video modes X is capable of supporting.
The first mode in the config file is the mode it starts up in
e.g
        "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768"
means it starts in 640 by 480 resolution; if you want it to start in
1024x786 change it to:
        "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

If I understand what you are saying correctly, like huge letters and a
window takes up the whole screen, then check that /usr/X11R6/bin/X is
linked to the server you require. This happened when I linked it to
XF86_VGA16 before I ran XF86Setup and my setup actually XF86Config
actually required XF86_S3V, later found out that setup actually calls
VGA16 rather than X.

I think this is the key statement, if it were to do with Virtual,
the screen would look fine, if he has X linked to say VGA16 and has
settings for say S3 or SVGA in /etc/XF86Config, then you get just that
effect, quite weird, took me a few minutes to realise what I had done.

1. Magnified Display

G'day
I've just installed Red Hat 6.0 on my P166MMX about 6 times with various
configurations and managed to get X started up running Gnome and
Enlightenment. But the display is magnified about 5 or 6 times and
doesn't scroll so I can only use the top half of the windows by moving
them around.
How can I fix it?

Ta,
Robert
