Hi,

I am having problems getting RPM to work correctly.  I have recently
installed a fresh Linux system - Slackware 3.4 - and I want to add KDE
which all seems to come as rpm's.  So I have downloaded the rpm tar file
, installed it using 'tar xvzf rpm***.tar.gz' from / and created the
directory /var/lib/rpm as the readme says.

But when I try to run it say by typing:

rpm -q anyfile.rpm

it comes back with the error:

failed to open //var/lib/rpm/packages.rpm

Am I missing another step?  The FAQ doesn't seem so help much on
installation.  Thanks for any help
