A query. Which X server to use for the Asus AGP-V2740 video card?

Hi there,

I have tried using the standard SVGA server and found that it only
recognises 64k of video memory instead of the 8M.  Hence, I only
get the resolution of 300 X 320.

Any idea of a work around or is it a loss cause?

Thanks in advance.

The ASUS AGP-V2740 is an inexpensive card using the Intel i740 graphics
controller chip, has 8 MB SDRAM on-board, and comes in AGP form factor.
On-line specs at ASUS do not clarify whether that chipset supports VESA
video modes ("SVGA") for backwards compatibility.  (Further information
quoted below suggests that it probably doesn't support SVGA.)

So, I looked in the XFree86 FAQ, and found the following in
http://xfree86.org/FAQ/#i740:

Q.F22- Is a server for the Intel i740 chipset available?

Boards based on Intel i740 chips are not supported in XFree86, as
programming documentation is not available.  For users of Linux
based machines, Red Hat has made a binary only server XBF_i740
available at their ftp server.  Check ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/XBF
  for details.

The phrase "programming documentation is not available" is a polite
way of saying that Intel is making a point of not cooperating with
the XFree86 Project, regarding technical information about its
chipset as a trade secret.  You might want to write or telephone
Intel and _let them know_, if you disapprove.  If I were in your
shoes, I would.

Meanwhile, your best bet will _definitely_ be to use Red Hat's
binary-only "XBF"-series X server for the i740 -- and to _not_
attempt to use the SVGA server.
