Hi:

I'm having a strange problem on RH7.3, I have the exact same configuration
on the /etc/wvdial.conf on a RH7.2 and a RH7.3 machines. Both have the
same wvdial and ppp version and with the RH7.2 I have no problem connectin
to my ISP but with RH7.3 this is what happens: (I have set the "Stupid
Mode = 0" parameter on this run in order to dump what is receiving -I
think- from the ISP but with this option set to 1 is the same) [Modem is
an external USRobotics 56K]

--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.41

--> Initializing modem.
... and the same again ...

The logs shows:
/var/log/messages:

Jul 18 16:22:39 host pppd[28283]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Jul 18 16:22:39 hsot pppd[28283]: Connection terminated.
Jul 18 16:22:39 host pppd[28283]: Exit.

Any clue what this can be and a tip on how to fix it?

Thanks in advance,

William

Weird, doesn't seem like the ISP is sending a username/password prompt
to your machine.  I assume you have to authenticate?

Why do all this for a PPP connection?  Try replacing the initialization
with ATZ\&F or ATZ\&F0, or with ATZ\&F1 for some USRs.  That is if you
can, wvdial may not allow it.  The ``\'' may not be necessary, depending
on where the initialization is configured.

Looks like a modem configuration problem to me, or else you are connected
to something with rather strange behavior for a PPP connection.

Followups sent to comp.os.linux.networking only.

1. PPP Error: LCP: timeout seding Config-Requests

I call up two different ISP's with a similar script and one of them
(Earthlink) fails to connect under Linux (Win95 is OK) with the
following error (from /var/log/messages):

LCP: timeout seding Config-Requests
Connection terminated.
Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0
Exit

Does anyone know how to fix this?  My ISP has no clue.  Their response
was: "We don't support Linux.  What do you mean it's not 8-bit clean?
It's 32-bit clean!"
