Did you try the ldconfig command afterwards?

Lesstif (mwm) can't load library 'libXm.so.0'

Post by Jon D. Slate » Thu, 16 Jan 1997 04:00:00

I've compiled Lesstif and done a 'make install'.  It looks like
everthing should be working.

I've even found the 'libXm.so.0' file in the libXm directory.

But, when I 'startx' I get a message: "mwm: can't load library
'libXm.so.0'".  I can see the lib in /usr/X11R6/lib.

So what's wrong?

Thanks in adavance for the help!

You probably got it working now anyway but try running ldconfig if
not.

Are you sure the file in /usr/X11R6/lib is the same?  There is check the
name of the file carefully.  I think you'll find you were looking at a
different file.  If I'm wrong about that, check to make sure they have
the correct permissions, and that libXm.so.0 is linked to the correct
file (libXm.so.0.76).

I just finished downloading, compiling and installing lesstif about an
hour ago.  The way I got it to work was to su to root and copy the libX*
files from the lesstif installation directories to the /usr/X11/lib
directory.

I suppose there is a better way to do this, using ldconfig, but this
worked.

Try running ldconfig - the loader is probably complaining as libXm
isn't registered in the /etc/ld.so.cache file.
