Suse 6.3 locks up in X windows

Suse 6.3 locks up in X windows

Post by Lance Holme » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I've done a clean install a number of times now with suse6.3 and I've
had it hang on a regular basis in X windows.  I'm not sure if it would
hang otherwise because I don't do that much work in the command
environment.

I have had no problem using 6.0 suse prior to this.

I'm running an AMD K6-2 450 mhz with 64 meg PC100 and Diamond Viper 550
AGP card.  I have a 6.4 western digital ide drive and various other
hardware that shouldn't matter.

I noticed that there is a patch available for the XSVGA driver at the
suse site which I have downloaded but haven't had a chance to try.

I was wondering if anyone else has had a problem like this.  I bring up
X windows and run a number of programs and about 2 minutes into the
session the system locks up solid.  I then have to power down which the
system doesn't like.

Like I've said I have had no problems with 6.0 suse.

I also like the slackware release because of its down to earth look and
feel (kinda like SunOS) and so I have downloaded the latest and I am
going to try that one tonight.   I may just give up on forking over
money for realeases and just stay with slackware.  The one big reason I
went with suse was it had the best bang for the buck and it would save
me a lot of time downloading and configuring things.

This is the first time I've had a real problem with linux not that I use
it all that much but having it lock up solid is a real kick in the
pants.

I have been having a terrible time with 6.3 also.  had used 6.0 previous
with no trouble.   now my netscape lock much more than in 6.0, pcmcia is
giving me greif, new sound configure is a pain ( have to start it in
root) cant get my pcmcia cdrom to work.  what a pain.  I think if this
had been my first version of suse I'd be looking elswhere

What lock up are your talking about? losing your mouse?

On my PC I will lose the mouse completely and it seems to lock up X but actually
only the mouse is gone. Try this :
You go in a separate console session with ctrl F2 then return to graphic but
make sure you hand is on the mouse immediately after you gave the ctrl F7
command. Immediate or almost immediate crash is the consequence. The current solution
I've found is to not touch the mouse at all when you switch console. I think it is
a bug in KDE. I will test with Gnome to see if the problem is there too.

I might ask SuSE but it the past they've refused to give any other information
but for installation. Luckily the CDs are cheap at http://www.chumbo.com since
the supports sucks big time.

As for crashing of Netscape with certain web sites I've had that with Corel
and RedHat as well. This is a Netscape issue, not SuSE.

Aside from all that I love this SuSE 6.3, it is one of the best so far.
I just wish I knew which damm script I can remove to keep those stupid pcmcia
messages on boot since I recompile the kernel with no PCMCIA support. I never
installed that support during the upgrade so I thought.

1. UPS Software under SuSE Linux 6.3 ?

Greetings,

does anybody heard about an oppurtunity to
watch an UPS (Online 1000S/LCD - Data Watch)
connected on RS/6000 model (dev/tty1) from
a wished Linux client everywhere ?

I'd tried several UPS software included SuSe 6.3,
without results.
Any suggests ?
