building LINUX only box (newbie)

Post by Kathy Archack » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

I'm interested in building machine that uses LINUX only. I want to setup the
machine as a firewall for my ASDSL conection via TELOCITY (leases Bell
Atlantic lines). I'm looking for any help start to finish, as I am a newbie
and am trying to migrate away from MS.  I have a 133 Pentium motherboard
with 80M of Ram, three hard drives; 2-1.2G, 1-1.6G and a 8X cdROM anything
else needed is open to suggestion.  The workstation to be connected,
currently uses: (duel boot) W98, W2000 Proffesional.  At some time it the
not so distant future I will be setting up a home LAN.
Please include an explaination with your suggestions.  Because, I
desire a understanding of the OS and not just a Cook Book approach.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Robert A.

In my limited spare time I am doing a similar task (only with a 486sx
200MB hd and no cd, did I mention it is a compaq all in one unit?
Challenges are good :))  You did not mention your network cards, I believe
that you will need two, one to connect to the DSL modem and one to
connect to your local network(even if that is just one computer for now).

Some good resources are:
http://www.linuxdoc.org -- has many indepth "HOWTO" for most anything
you might want to do on linux especially read the IP-Masquerade and
IP-Chains howtos

http://www.linuxnewbie.org -- Easier to understand help on how to do
things in linux.

Those and other similar sources should give you most if not all the
information you need to set up your linux box and firewall.  This
newsgroup should also be a source of answers to any problems or
troubleshooting questions you might have.

Good Luck,
David

You should check the Linux Hardware HOWTO document
(http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO.html) if you want a basic
grounding in what's good and what's not. It's not been updated since
9/99, though, so it doesn't include information on the "latest &
greatest" stuff. For more detail, you might want to look into my _Linux
Hardware Handbook_, which is due out in a couple of weeks. (Check
http://www.rodsbooks.com/hardware/ for more information.)

The easiest way to ensure you get a working system is to buy from a
company that'll put Linux on the computer from the start, and preferably
from a company that specializes in Linux. Of course, if you want to
learn about Linux hardware, this won't force you to do so.
http://www.linux.org has a subsection about Linux hardware, including
links to a bunch of Linux computer makers.

1. Can Ping Windows Box, But Windows Box Can't Ping Linux Box

Hi,
the setup is Linux Mandrake 7.0 with Edimax 10/100 PCI NIC
with Reaktek 8139 connected to Win98 with 3COM ...3C509 NIC.
Linux can ping the Windows box, but the Windows box, can't ping
the Linux box.
