Can't shutdown - get message Shutdown is already running

Post by Marcus Nadena » Wed, 05 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I have installed Linux 2.0.28.
and have the problem to shutdown the machine.

When I give the
- key combination CTRL-ALT-DEL or
- the command as root: reboot

it answers always:
- shutdown is already running

and does nothing.

Can anybody help me?

Marcus

Hi, I had the same problem when I upgraded kernel sources from
1.2.13 to 2.0.25. You will probably need to upgrade some other
packages that get broken with the new kernel. There is one
important file in the kernel sources:

doc/changes.

It explains exactly what you will probably need to have so that the new
kernel runs correctly. By the way, what I had to replace was the
sysvinit package, containing shutdown, halt, boot and other stuff. BUT,
it was NOT the only thing I had to replace!

GOOD LUCK!

Try:
        rm /etc/shutdown.pid

You do have a stale /etc/shutdown.pid file laying around . Delete it.
