VFS: Cannot open root device """ or 08:41

VFS: Cannot open root device """ or 08:41

I have an old 66mhz 486 Compaq Deskpro.

I have added memory to it so the RAM is at 40 megs.

When I try to install Red Hat 7.1 I must add the line:

linux mem=40M to the line at the boot: prompt. Otherwise
it tells me I don't have enough memory, and ends.

But then with "mem=40M" seconds later the installation bombs with the
message:

CFS: Cannot open root device """" or 08:41
Please append a correct "root=" boot option.

I am trying to install from diskettes (to boot), and then
the rest from a CD-ROM.

Any ideas about what a correct "root=" boot option
would be ?  Thanks very much.

1. boot stops at "crc errorVFS: Cannot open root device 08:41"

Hi, when i boot and I come to
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
I get
crc errorVFS: Cannot open root device 08:41
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:41

I use Redhat 7.0, this error came after several power failures in the area!
Can anyone help me, or tell me what it is!
