MFM HDD

Post by hu.. » Sun, 31 Aug 1997 04:00:00

I'm trying to install Linux on a MFM drive.
The Miniscribe drive is attached to a Western Digital controler.

I use the Slackware bootdsks "xt" and root disk "color", the latest I
could find: 2.0.30.

During the xt boot sequence, it recognize the adapter:
I get messages:

xd_geninit: detected a Western Digital WDXT-GEN2 controler (type 5) at
address 000c8000

xd_geninit: detected 1 hard drive (using IRQ5 & DMA3)
xg_geninit: drive 0 geometry - heads = 6, cylinders = 809, sectors = 17
 xda:

My drive's specs are 809,6,26.

It prompts me for the root floppy, loads the ramdisk and gives me the
login prompt.

But then, I can't run fdisk.

If I enter "fdisk", it says:
 "using /dev/sda as default device!"
 "Unable to open /dev/sda".

I tried fdisk with many different HDD names even if I knew they were
reserved for other type of drives (ex: hda, ide drive). I could never
get fdisk to run.

Any Idea?

Thanks in advance,

Jean,

Check the boot-prompt howto, you should be able to pass some params to
explicitly tell the kernel the disk geometry.

xt drives are /dev/xda and /dev/xdb

I tried "ramdisk xda=809,6,26" but it had no effect.

---

I tried "fdisk /dev/xda". I got the result I mentioned above.

I listed the /dev directory. There are no xd* devices on the ramdisk.

Thanks for the reply.

Hm.. try giving it 'hd=809,6,26'see ,if that works.

You should just be able to create them with mknod.

try:
fdisk /dev/xda
so it will use /dev/xda as the default device. . .

1. LINUX+386+8BIT-XT-MFM-HDD

Hi there,
I tried to install minilinux on a 386PC with a 20 MB MFM harddisk-
drive. But no kernel I used was able to find the harddisk.

It is a strange thing with this drive: The manufacture of the HDD
was Lapine. A label says "303 cylinder". No BIOS-Setting
is matching this parameter, and it is only running with
"Drive C = none" and a special MFM-Controller (under DOS
and without any device driver)! The MFM-Controler is a
"SMS Model OMTI 5510 ASSY" with 2 EPROMs.
Can anyone help me to solve this problem? Do I need an
selfmade device in /dev/. Which parameter do I need
to make this device file for this harddisk&controller?
