system load

Hi,

I was always wondering, what exactly determines the system load? Is it
just cpu, or cpu and memory usage? And how is it benchmarked? Does load
cahnge on different processors? Example a Sparc Station has a laod of .5
with 10 people, but linux on my 486 gets up to 1.2 when starting netscape.

If you are talking about the load stats given by uptime then "man
uptime" for an explaination.  (Yes, in other words, RTFM).
