Newbie: Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount Root FS on 08:01

I ran fips, but I got an error message there, so I tried to run
autoboot when I got the VFS message. I have several hard drives, all
removable, and I'm tying to install Red Hat 4.02 on a 4.0 gig western
digital drive all by itself. What's up with fips, and the kernel
panic???? The fips error was inconsistencies in the partition, so I
reformatted several times and I could never clear that hurdle. Any
helps is much appreciated!
