Further to my last message, I just wanted to post some of the typical
junk that xdvi is coming out with when I run it.  Here is one example
of some of the junk (there is a lot more of this) :

xdvi: Can't find font cmss9; using cmr10 instead at 600 dpi.

################ end of xdvi junk

It's obvious that two things are malfunctioning.  First of all the tfm
fonts already seem to exist in

        /usr/lib/texmf/texmf/fonts/tfm/public/cm

but xdvi ignored them.  Secondly, it ran metafont to make the tfm
files, but then claimed it could not find them.

Now, this is not just a problem with xdvi, but also with dvips, so the
whole system is probably wrongly set up.

I should point out that I just copied the whole thing from the redhat
distribution so it is as redhat gives it out.

What should I do?

Thanks for your help.

xdvi, metafont and redhat linux 3.0.3

Post by Dr B.K. Bullo » Thu, 10 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Every time I try to run xdvi on the redhat linux 3.0.3 system I am
using, it insists on using metafont to recreate the fonts, even if it
has already done this.  How can I set up so that the fonts do not need
to be recreated every time?  Also, xdvi sometimes comes out with wonky
stuff such as misaligned page numbers on index pages.

As usual with TeX the default documentation is dense and
incomprehensible, so if there is any easy to understand reference
about this kind of thing please also let me know about that.

Thanks very much for any help.

1. xdvi, metafont, 4.3.3

Does anyone know, where to get a working binary of Tex metafont and
xdvi. It seams that the no font chache is used, so that calling xdvi
will cause a font build every time. Also xdvi did not refresh if a
window is moved over it. teTex package was taken from www.bull.com but
it was for an older AIX version. So is there a binary distribution for
AIX 4.3.3 ??
Thanks a lot
Nicolas
