RH 5.2 kernel patched kernel 2.1.132 to 2.2.0-pre5

I just installed the kernel 2.1.132 and patched it too 2.2.0-pre5 then I
compiled it and installed it and when I boot I get the following
messages

Jan  8 04:22:23 localhost kernel: klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg
started.
Jan  8 04:22:23 localhost kernel: Cannot find map file.
Jan  8 04:22:23 localhost kernel: Error seeking in /dev/kmem
Jan  8 04:22:23 localhost kernel: Error adding kernel module table
entry.
Jan  8 04:22:23 localhost kernel: Linux version 2.2.0-pre5

Its not loading my modules and doesn't work correctly after boot. I
copied the System.map file over too /boot/ and changed the symlink to
point to my new System .map and I have done everything I could think of
to get it too load the modules still it does not. What am I missing
here? Thanx.....

I don't think you can make that leap without the intervening
patches. Why not just download the full 2.2.0-pre(x) source
(it's 6 now), compile, and install that. Then you can patch
that as the patches are released.

1. RH 5.2 upgrading to kernel 2.1.132

After I upgrade my kernel I get the following messages upon depmod -a

/lib/modules/2.1.132/fs/nls_cp437.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.1.132/fs/binfmt_elf.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.1.132/fs/isofs.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.1.132/fs/ext2.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.1.132/misc/binfmt_elf.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.1.132/misc/isofs.o: unresolved symbol(s)
/lib/modules/2.1.132/misc/ext2.o: unresolved symbol(s)

I have preformed the recompiling / configuring / installing about 20 -
30 times in the last 2 days still it will not work correctly because of
unresolved symbols.

I have followed the kernel README and the kernel how-to with no luck.

Has anyone else seen stuff like this and know how to resolve the
problem?

Thanx
