Apple's DOS Comp. Motherboard and Linux

Apple's DOS Comp. Motherboard and Linux

I have a PowerMac 6100 DOS Compatible computer with a PC
motherboard.  I'm thinking about puttng Linux on my PC motherboard
(486DX2/66 Intel chip; 16 M RAM on-board) so I can get used to Linux
before the PPC version is released.  I'm definitely interested in
the networking capabilities, as I'm direct-connected to an Ethernet
network at school.  I'm a little worried about hidden architecture
conflicts, like having to go through AppleTalk before getting to the
Ethernet hardware--Apple doesn't do a very good job with their
manuals.  Has anyone here done this before?  Any tips?

I think your lost here. It is not possible to install Linux on the PC
motherboards of 6100/486DX since you don't have a "real" PC. All the device
access is done via Apple's own routines and noone has written linux drivers
to support these. You will have to wait for the Apple/OSF linux on the
mach3 microkernel later this year. My 6100 is waiting too :-)
