Debian hangs during floppy install

Post by Dani » Wed, 29 Jul 1998 04:00:00

I'm trying to install Debian from floppies
but the system hangs on the line

'hde: probing with STATUS instead of ALTSTATUS'

I can't find any documentation on either
STATUS or ALTSTATUS.

I'm trying to install in on a DECpc 320p
notebook.  This system has a 386sx-20
with 8mb of memory and an 84mb conner hard drive.

Any suggestions?

I've also tried installing RH5.1 on the same
PC with the same results.  Maybe it's some
problem with the Kernal and the systems
hardware?

The system is a DECpc 320p notebook with
8 MB of RAM and a 84 MB Conner harddrive.

Only a question:
Did you use the tecra bootdisk?

Hi Jens,

Yes, I've tried booting from the image file
(on floppy) resc1440.bin, resc1440tecra.bin
and resc1440tecra-fast.bin.  Also, I've
tried booting from RH5.1 image file boot.img

All seem to have the same problem.  I'm now
trying my hand at creating a boot disk from
kernal 2.035 and see if that makes a difference.
Otherwise my luck with digital PCs has been
all bad.

I've downloaded the floppy images from
Redhat 4.2 and they seem to past the point
where kernal 2.034 hangs.  However once it
booted I didn't see any options to continue
the install process.

Any other suggestions?

Debian hangs during floppy install

Post by Pieter Kru » Wed, 29 Jul 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I don't have any problems with ISDN on a Teles 16.3 card, but using a
*normal* modem seems to bug my systems (or me).

I use the ATB40 and the ATDIY4<isp-isdn-no> with pppd and chat, but I
can't
get it to work.

Minicom works fine with the thing...

Loaded the latest firmware on the Zyxel (3.x)

The problem probably lais somewhere in my /etc/ppp/<scripts>

Does anyone has a Zyxel Omni TA128 working fine on Redhat 4.2/5.0 ?
(kernels 2.0.33-35 and 2.1.102-109)

And if so, would somebody please care to help me out with the scripts ?

Regards,

Assuming that you still have Microsoft on your laptop,
use the LOADLIN bootup installation method as discussed
in Debian's installation instructions.

No, people. If he gets to the "hde: probing ..." line, the kernel is
already loaded and running; the problem seems to be that searching for
disks causes it to hang.

What other messages have already appeared?  What happens if you append

    hde=noprobe hdf=noprobe

to the LILO / whatever boot prompt?  It sounds strange that your system
would have disks connected to a tertiary IDE controller. I expect that
there is some strange hardware that looks like an IDE interface to the
kernel, but does completely other things when accessed as an IDE interface
(leading to the hang).

1. debian floppy problem only during the setup

I installed debian 2.1 and it asked if I wanted to make
a rescue disk, so I said ok.  Then it went into some sort
of capacity measuring mode, (which it did not do b4)
then it took quite a while to make the diskette.
The rest of the setup went ok.
But when I try to boot up with the diskette it won't work.
It displays 15 dots on the bottom then it seems to hang.
And it takes about 10 minutes to display those dots....
(Before it took less than a second...)
At first I thought it was bad diskette, but apparently
that's not the case, b/c I can r/w it ok.  I have no other
problem with using other diskette under linux either.
Apparently it's only while making the diskette, that some-
thing goes wrong....  what's the cure?
How can I make a rescue diskette?
