Redhat 5.10 to 5.1 upgrade loses a cdrom drive

I used the 5.1 Redhat cd to Upgrade my working 5.0 installation.
Result? when attempting to mount the cdrom, message: fs type iso9660
not supported by kernel!! Aghh! How can this be? Where is my backup?
Sob.

Don't go back, fix it!

Find your kernel config file, for Slackware it's /usr/src/linux-2.0.34/.config
and make sure it contains "CONFIG_ISO9660_FS=y".

Redhat 5.10 to 5.1 upgrade loses a cdrom drive

This was a tricky one. The problem lies in the loadable kernel modules
and the way they are initialized by /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit. RedHat made
the rc.sysinit file so complicated they shot themselves in the foot.
This file checks with /etc/lilo.conf to identify the kernel version
before calling /sbin/depmod to initialize the loadable modules. If lilo
is not configured exactly as RedHat expects, the process will fail.

I explained a few possible workarounds in a previous post to this group.
Send me a note if you have difficulty finding or using the workarounds.
