Multi boot using System Commander

Multi boot using System Commander

Post by Rob Engl » Wed, 30 Apr 1997 04:00:00

I'm trying to get Windows95, WindowsNT and Linux to multi boot on the
same system. I prefer it over the LILO utility, so ...

I have a 1.6gig EIDE drive that successfully boots and runs 95 and NT.
I installed Linux to the second EIDE drive (540M), and am trying to
figure out where and how the boot loader goes, hopefully using System
Commander 3.0.3.

I just got the O'Reilly book Running Linux, so I'll start in there,
but should any of you have a working example, I would like to see how
you set it up.

Thanks,

Rob Engler

If you install LILO into the superblock of your linux partition, you can
use System Commander to start your Linux partition (lilo).

Actually the best place to look is the book for system commander.
That fine manual has a very good section on common installations.
Although my book is for 2.1 I cannot believe that the newer book
doesn't have that section.

However, just in case try this. Have LILO's target location set to ROOT
- Use superblock of the root linux partition. Then when you reboot
system commander will probably pick up Linux automaticaly. If it
doesn't you will have to do an Alt-S, go to setup and then go to
order,add and removal menu.

Good luck

You might want to try out Power Boot, which is similar to System
Commander except it doesn't have the multiFAT feature (useless if you
only want to boot from different partitions) and it costs very much
less (you don't pay for packaging and stuff you don't need).

The eval version of Power Boot is available at

1. System Commander problems (was Re: Possible to boot freebsd from system commander?)

I'm having the same problem at the moment.  I've managed to get
through configuring my other items (NT, 95, DOS).

I've upgraded from 2.1.5 to 2.2.2, hoping the upgrade would shake
things loose and write a boot-sector to the drive I want to boot
FreeBSD on, but no luck.  The symptom is a pop-up dialog (presented by
System Commander at boot time) that says the boot record is bogus (or
something like that).

Of course, I can still boot off my floppy (with Boot: sd(2,a)/kernel),
so I know there's something there that's bootable.

But, I'm having trouble understanding the three choices sysinstall
gives you for boot records.  Can anyone give me a clue as to the
correct choice here if I've installed System Commander on the 1st
drive, and FreeBSD on my 3rd drive (and for what it's worth, on the
1st partition).

I used to multiboot using the NT loader using the method of compiling
a bood program from the FreeBSD src somewhere, creating a bootsec
program which I then deposited on Drive C: and then mucked with the NT
loader configuration to present the FreeBSD choice.  But along with
reorganizing my big drive 1, I changed to System Commander to take
advantage of some of the other features SC has like partition-hiding
and multiple primary partitions on a single drive.

Thanks
