Newbie: Need help with Raid on AbitKT7A and installing linux

Post by Jurgen Steenha » Wed, 21 Nov 2001 22:57:13

Hi everyone,

This is my system:
256Mb ram
Athlon 1Ghz (133*7.5)
Abit KT7a-Raid mobo
Sblive (one of the first)
Gforce 2 Pro 64MB (Gainward)

Maxtor HD 27.3GB(Udma66) IDE 1 / MAster (Used to boot Winme/1
partition)
Maxtor HD 40.9GB(Udma66) IDE 1 Slave
No Brand Cd player 32 speed IDE 2 (master)
Acer CD Rewriter 12speed IDE2 (slave)

Maxtor HD40 GB (UDMA 100) IDE3 /Master Raid controller
Maxtor HD40 GB (UDMA 100) IDE4 /Master Raid controller

The two 40gb Hd's are in windows in Raid(striping) to get 1 HD of 80
GB

What i want to do is install linux (suse 7.3) on this computer.
Question is, how do i go about it.

27.3 exists of 2 partitions, one of C:\ (21GB) and one of the rest
E:\(+-6Gb)
The D:\ (40.9Gb) is one big partition.
F:\ is the 80 GB raid configuration currently set up for windows
(fat32)

Questions
1) Does suse 7.3 have full support for the raid controller on my mobo
2) Is it possible to install the linux completely on the (if there's
support for it) Raid HD
3) How should i 'devide' the HD (I read something about different
partitions like /boot ; /swap ; etc ...)
4) Which Program should i use to do so (i have partition magic 7.0 but
someone told me linux doesn't realy like it )
5) Will I be able to access my 'windows HD's' in linux (read/write)
and will I be able to the the same with the linux partitions
(read/write them from windows)
6) If  there's no support for my Raid, what would be my best options
(there's no data yet on the raid)

I can't help with the raid problem, but I have a question for you...
I have the same mobo and cpu. MY PROBLEM is the cpu boots to 750mhz instead
of 1g.
My settings are :
CPU Speed         1000(133)
Multiplier              7.5
FSB/PCI              133/33
FSB Plus              0

It should boot to 1g. The only thing I can find OFF, is the core voltage.
MINE is set to 1.5v. I
think a 1g Athlon should be 1.75v. Did you have any problems with your mobo?

Thanks for any info

1. Newbie needs Linux Raid 1 help

I want to run raid 1 on Mandrake 8.1 system
8.1 comes with kernel raid patch and raid tools
2 harddrives
want to mirror partitions
hda contains live system
hdb contains same partitions but no data

proposed raidtab is as follows:
raiddev /dev/md0
        raid-level      1
        nr-raid-disks   2
        nr-spare-disks  0
        chunk-size      4
        persistent-superblock 1
        device          /dev/hda1
        raid-disk       0
        device          /dev/hdb1
        raid-disk       1

question: when I run mkraid will raid 1 copy contents of raid-disk 0
to raid-disk 1 without loss of any data on raid-disk 0. if I screw up,
it seems that raid 1 could copy hdb1 to hda1 and therefore wipe out my
system.

Thanks in advance,
Bill
