linux setup - hard disk problem?

Post by Casey Claibor » Fri, 05 May 1995 04:00:00

I have the following set-up:
486-SX 33
Ami bios
GSI IDE 18 Controller (has it's own BIOS)
170M Conner hard drive
Western Digital 850M hard drive

I am trying to install slackware 2.2.0

I have made a 30M DOS partition on the Conner drive
and a 170M DOS partition on the Western Digital drive.
When I use the Linux boot disk, it does not recognize
the drives as "hda" and "hdb" but instead sees my drives
as "hdc" and "hdd". Addtionally, I also get the following:

hdd: timeout: status = 0x50 {Drive Ready Seek Complete}
hdd: timeout: status = 0x50 {Drive Ready Seek Complete}
hdd: timeout: status = 0x50 {Drive Ready Seek Complete}
idle1: do_idle_reset: success
hdd: timeout: status = 0x50 {Drive Ready Seek Complete}
hdd: timeout: status = 0x50 {Drive Ready Seek Complete}
hdd: timeout: status = 0x50 {Drive Ready Seek Complete}
end_request: I/O error, dev 1640 sector 0
VFS: Insert floppy and press enter

Of course, I do not do the VFS part because the drives
are recognized as "hdc" and "hdd". What is the problem?

Again - I'll be looking out here for the answer but if

Thanks in advance

1. Replacing Hard Disk - Copying Linux system to new Hard Disk ????

Simple.

1) create a lilo boot disk with lilo, and the kernel on it (email me if you
   need to know how to do this too)

2) install the new drive in the system, create a filesystem on it, and
   mount it on, say, /mnt

3) copy the filesystem over, making sure to preserve permissions, and
   exclude /mnt and /proc.  Some ways to do this are

cp -a -x / /mnt
        note that the -x means only stay on one filesystem, so if you
        normally have more than one filesystem mounted, you'll need to copy
        those over, too.

( cd / ; tar --atime-preserve -l -p --same-owmer -v -cf - / ) | ( cd /mnt ;
tar --atime-preserve -p --same-owner -xf - )
        but all as one line...

4) after veryfying everything looks good, you can remove the old system,
   reboot off of the boot disk, and re-install lilo on the new disk.
