Hello,

I successfully installed the os the other day, but soon came into problems.
First, the os would hang and I would have to restart. Eventually, this
caused problems on boot. Finally, it would no longer boot. BTW,  I used
LILO. So, I figured I would just perform a fresh install of the os. I
re-partitioned and formatted the drives(2 seperate) and tried to re-install.
I got past the loading linux and then some kernal text messages. Then I
recieved the error
Kernal panic : VFS insert Root Floppy and press enter.

Problem is that I don't have a root floppy other than the boot disk that
came with the software.

I tried to use a rescue disk by creating it from the CDROM. But this led to
the error
Kernal panic: VFS could not mount root fs on 2:00

Please, any help would be appreciated. I would like to start from scratch if
possible. I was able to get Win 98 installed on the drives. But I would like
to replace it with Linux..

Thanks,
Ray

Install problems

Post by Ray Lassite » Wed, 22 Dec 1999 04:00:00

It appears that I can at least now get the installation started by using a
Windows98 boot disk to get access to the cdrom. Then I can type setup and
start installation. However, I can never complete the whole thing. YaST
hangs every time, and everytime somewhere different. I have gotten as far as
installing the aaa package of the base install.

Anyone have any ideas. I am almost ready to send this machine swimming.

Thanks,
Ray

1. install RH 6.2 over RH 7.0, install problem

Hi,

after several trials I managed to start the RH 6.2 installation manager using:
boot dkb0 -file kernels/generic.gz -flags "root=/dev/hdc"   in SRM.
When I choose KDE workstation installation in the installation manager I get the following error:
"An error has occured - no valid devices were found on which to create new filesystems. Please check
your hardwarefor the cause of this problem"

I have a Miata with 2 scsi HD's and I don't really know what kind of cd-rom.
Is this error due to a bad boot command in SRM or due to the fact that RH 7.0 is already installed
on the system ?.
If yes how do I remove it using SRM ?

Thanks a lot.
