Matsushita CD-ROM Problems (Yggdrasil)

Post by Tom Fri » Sat, 31 Dec 1994 11:34:25

I have the Fall 94 CD-ROM and the Matsushita SB16 CD-ROM.  I have looked
around for the proceedure's for this hardware, and it looks like a catch-22.

I would seem that I would have to modify the sb header file, and then regen
the kernel, build a new floppy.  What a pain in the neck!

To make things worse, I can boot DOZ, run the runlinux batch file, then
the system justs reboots after a flash of 80 periods (.).  I even took
the P5/90 cachs / turbo off, with no help.

Anyone already made the floppys OR have a solution?  Disks tried:
Fall 94, Rev D
and the latest / greatest  beta from ftp.yggdrasil.com.

Thansk.

I have the same setup. There's no problem at all. Just select Matshushita
from thee make config and it works.

No, just run make config.

This sounds like a problem! I have found a number of bugs in the Fall 94
PnP, this may be yet another.

Excuse me.  But, wasn't SB16 as clear as SB 16?  I knew exactly what he
was talking about.  In fact, most adverti*ts use his nomenclature.
Don't flame or be picky unless there's a CLEAR ambiguity or discrepency.

Hello Tom Fritz and all others,

What do you mean - "Matsushita SB 16 CD-ROM"?

Try to give exact information, or you will receive "idiot hints"
and flames.

Cheers ... Eberhard

: Excuse me.

I will.

:  But, wasn't SB16 as clear as SB 16?  I knew exactly what he
: was talking about.

So, tell me the real name of that drive. But hurry, please. This mail was
meant to give the definitive answer - life is short, and there are many
things undone.

:  In fact, most adverti*ts use his nomenclature.

That does have no more precision than "IBM compatible PC".

: Don't flame or be picky unless there's a CLEAR ambiguity or discrepency.

You obviously do not know what you are talking about.

Awaiting the necessary technical information next...

BTW: for the real stupid askers, I have the procedure "mail me your
DOS driver and your CONFIG.SYS, and I tell you what you have" - but
I can not play that game very often; it simply is eating too much time.

Cheers -e-

This is a SoundBlaster 16.  It is based on a 16 bit bus.  The kernel
knows it as sbpcd.

It is working fine at this point.  I replaced it.

1. Can't install Yggdrasil summer 94 CD-ROM with SCSI-1 CD-ROM

Hi,

I can't install my Yggdrasil summer 94 CD-ROM with the following SCSI
related configuration :
  1) 1 Adaptec 1542C controller
  2) 1 240MB SCSI-2 hard disk
  3) 1 Sound Blaster 16 AIC-6360 sound card
  4) 1 NEC SCSI-1 CD-ROM (I say it is SCSI-1 because ezscsi.exe provided by
Adaptec detects it as a SCSI-1 one without support for parity checking).

I have tried to install Linux with the following two configurations :
  1) connect the CD-ROM to SB16 card and the hard disk to 1542C controller :
     I typed the command
     Linux aha152x=0x340,11,7,1
to boot Linux but failed after a long period of detecting my CD-ROM
and dumped a lot of messages about the queue status.
I noticed that the parity checking is enabled.

  2) connect the CD-ROM and hard disk to 1542C with parity checking disabled
while just connect the sound output from CD-ROM to SB16 card only :

I used the default booting process and it failed a lot faster and told
me that it can't mount the CD-ROM (kernel panic : unable to mount VFS).

These two configurations work fine under both OS/2 2.1 and DOS/Windows.

Now I need help to the following questions :
  1) How can I install Linux using this CD-ROM with such config ?
  2) Which other CD-ROM distribution can I use to install Linux ?

One of the major reasons to buy CD-ROM is to run Linux. Failing to do so
frustrated me a lot. Please help me !

Thanks in advance,
   Eddie
