Dual-boot: Windows 2000 (NTFS 5.0) | RedHat Linux 6.1 (LinuxFS)

Is it possible to dual-boot between NTFS 5.0 (Windows 2000) and RedHat Linux
6.1 (Linux partition)??  Which should I install first, and how do I go about
it?  Using a fresh hard drive.

Thanks,
Jon Davis

YES
Install W2K 1st.
then you have a choice.
Install Redhat, and install "Lilo" which will offer you dual boot
options of Windows "W2K" or Linux "Redhat"
or install Redhat and use Loadlin, again boot options.
or install Redhat, and have it boot off a floppy,
or from floppy installed  Redhat,
from Redhat command prompt
"dd if=/dev/had6 "or your correct boot drive for redhat"
of=/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
then
mcopy bootsect.lnx a: to a DOS floppy
copy the file in W2k to your C:/ drive
install W2k's boot manager "boot.ini"
edit boot.ini to insert" redhat"bootsect.lnx""
reboot W2k will have a boot manager with redhat

There are a number of ways to do this

Install Windows 2000 first... that way it'll set up all it's pointers, etc...
Linux doesn't need all that stuff so do it second. Also, Windows won't detect
Linux, so you'll be unable to boot into it.

With linux second you'll get a LILO BOOT option... just type DOS and hit enter.

I have a triple boot, and this is perferct... I just type DOS at LILO, then
select win98 or Win2K at the boot.inin prompt.

Personally I prefer to make an entry in the Win NT boot loader menu (I
assume it is still there under Win2000).

This removes the need for using the LILO prompt.  The only problem with
this is that you to strip the boot sector and create a DOS file form it
each time to recompile your kernel.  However I just use a script to do
this automatically so it's a relatively painless process.

There is a Mini Howto which explains everything.

Dual-boot: Windows 2000 (NTFS 5.0) | RedHat Linux 6.1 (LinuxFS)

I appreciate all of the replies to this message, but I have yet to get any
to work.

I have had RedHat Linux 6.1 installed forever, and usually ran Windows 98
with it.  I used LILO (natch!) and then UPGRADED to Windows 2000.  And my
LILO boot still worked.  But I was unhappy with the performance that
Windows 2000 was reporting installed over Windows 98, so I wiped my
Windows installation, but kept my Linux partition.  I then INSTALLED
Windows 2000-- a fresh copy.  Now my LILO was gone. (Once more, natch.)
So I downloaded the ISO of RedHat 6.2 beta and UPGRADED my Linux 6.1,
thinking that I can just reinstall LILO.  It asked me if I would like to
do such, and I selected YES, with my default boot to DOS.  But, after a
reboot...no LILO.

I have also tried the trick with the "bootsect.lnx" in the "boot.ini" but
that has not worked either.  When I select Linux from the boot menu,
nothing happens.  It just sits there.

Now that I am done ranting (hehe) can anyone out there help?!  I look
forward to your replies and thank you in advance.
