Making Rootdisk w/ Slackware 3.0 ELF

How can I create my own (zipped) rootdisk w/ ELF Slackware 3.0?
I've created the bootdisk by dd'ing the kernel to the floppy and rdev'ing with
ramdisk=1440.
I've put my own files for managing backup as well as  the main directories on
the floppy... but the kernel can't mount the rootdisk.
Is there a special tool for zipping the rootdisk?

Thanks to anyone for replying...
