Gnome, KDE and Keyboard woes in RH5.1

Gnome, KDE and Keyboard woes in RH5.1

Post by halfj.. » Mon, 26 Oct 1998 03:00:00

Hi,

I would appreciate it if someone could help me with the following
problems in RH5.1.

1] When I hit "startx" eveything works fine. I go into an X session
without any problems. Everything seems to be working. (keyboard, mouse
etc.). But when I exit Xwindows and return to the prompt my troubles
begin. If I type something at the prompt no characters appear (like a
password) but the command is excecuted.????

2] Whenever I type "gnome-linuxconf" I get the following error :
                "segmentation fault" (core dumped) .

If I type "gnome-session" or "gnome-terminal" I get the following
error :
                "***WARNING*** Cannot open Display.

3] Could someone (if possible, and if you have the time) just explain
to me (and all the others like me) exactly how to install and setup
Gnome and KDE. I am sure that everyone would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

I dont think you want your password appearing on screen.

GNOME needs X. You cannot execute it outside of X. This is what
the display error is all about.

Seems everything is fine on your system. You are just
not executing commands in the right place.

1. Newbie question - keyboard and mouse won't work in KDE or Gnome

I have tried my first installation of Linux in the form of Mandrake 8.0
(installed as the only OS on the computer).  My only problem is that neither
the keyboard or mouse works when in a graphical interface.  I first tried
the normal installation (graphical) and I could not get past the first
screen (select your keyboard).  I then tried the text interface and my
keyboard works fine.  I can complete the install in text but run into
problems when the machine boots for the first time.  It happly boots into
the linux graphical interface (either KDE or Gnome) but again the keyboard
or mouse wont work.

Any suggestions most welcome
Thanks
Martin
