Installing RH 5.2 on a 13gb disk with Promise Ultra66 IDE controller card---PLEASE READ

Hi,

and a 13gb hard disk.  I am having a really hard time getting Red Hat to
install on the disk.  Actually, I can't even get the installation program to
recognize the hard disk at all--Only the zip drive is recognized as /dev/hdd.
Let me basically explain what I did.

I installed System Commander so I could do some non-destructive resizing of the
Win95 partition. The Win95 partition was originally 13gb altogether.  I was
able to get the Win95 partition to 10gb and I gave Linux a 3gb partition (more
than I need anyway).  But when I try to install Linux, fdisk won't even
recognize the disk at all.  Disk Druid won't either.  Both of them only see the
zip drive as /dev/hdd.

I have been able to install Linux on other machines with no problems in this
area.  The only difference is that none of the machines that I had installed
Linux on had hard drives this big.  So now I am thinking that it is the IDE
controller card.

My question is...how do I get around the controller card so that the
installation program recognizes the hard disk?

is only temporary--thank God).

Thanks in advance,
Rob

The problem is that the Promise PCI Ultra ATA 66 controller card is VERY
VERY new.  All ATA 66 controllers are.  I don't know how well it will work
with Linux.  If you REALLY think that it's the controller card, your
motherboard has ATA 33 IDE controllers built onto it.  Remove the controller
card and re-enable your on-board IDE controllers and attach your drives
there instead.

I have something else you can try first, but I don't know if it will work.
Try typing this in when it asks for parameters when loading up the boot disk
(or when booting from the CD):

   linux hda=1580,255,63

This may force Linux to see your hard drive using more than 1023 cylinders.
The 1580 is a rough estimate for a drive that's exactly 13GB in size.  There
is a possibility that when you type in 1580 there, when it's booting, it may
say (for example):

hda: MAXTOR <MODEL NUMBER> 13164 MB CHS=1582/255/63

when booting up.  It did that on my IBM 14.4GB when I typed in 1750/255/63.
It came up and showed:

hda: IBM DTTA-371440 14382 MB CHS=1757/255/63

It changed the number on me to the correct number.  This will get you at
least CLOSE to 1023 cylinders, so you will be able to use only the first 8GB
of your 13GB drive for Linux.  Make sure you move any other partitions away
from the beginning of the drive so that Linux can be somewhere totally
within that first 8GB.  Keep in mind I have only gotten this to work with
RedHat 5.2.  It did NOT work with RedHat 5.0.

1. Promise Ultra66 IDE Controller, Is it possible to use this card?

trying to install RH6 but, the boot disk does not recognize my hard drive
which is attached to a Promise Ultra66 IDE controller.

I found the following web site which explains how to install Linux using
with a Promise Ultra33 :
http://www.redhat.com/docs/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA-5.html
will this method also work with the Ultra66?   I'd hate to screw something
up.

Has anyone successfully used this card before? or does anyone have any
suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any usefully info.
