The problem is that the Promise PCI Ultra ATA 66 controller card is VERY
VERY new. All ATA 66 controllers are. I don't know how well it will work
with Linux. If you REALLY think that it's the controller card, your
motherboard has ATA 33 IDE controllers built onto it. Remove the controller
card and re-enable your on-board IDE controllers and attach your drives
there instead.
I have something else you can try first, but I don't know if it will work.
Try typing this in when it asks for parameters when loading up the boot disk
(or when booting from the CD):
linux hda=1580,255,63
This may force Linux to see your hard drive using more than 1023 cylinders.
The 1580 is a rough estimate for a drive that's exactly 13GB in size. There
is a possibility that when you type in 1580 there, when it's booting, it may
say (for example):
hda: MAXTOR <MODEL NUMBER> 13164 MB CHS=1582/255/63
when booting up. It did that on my IBM 14.4GB when I typed in 1750/255/63.
It came up and showed:
hda: IBM DTTA-371440 14382 MB CHS=1757/255/63
It changed the number on me to the correct number. This will get you at
least CLOSE to 1023 cylinders, so you will be able to use only the first 8GB
of your 13GB drive for Linux. Make sure you move any other partitions away
from the beginning of the drive so that Linux can be somewhere totally
within that first 8GB. Keep in mind I have only gotten this to work with
RedHat 5.2. It did NOT work with RedHat 5.0.
