Slack96 boot: "block move error 0x01", CRC error

Post by Krishna E. Be » Sat, 12 Apr 1997 04:00:00

PART 1
I get a "block move error 0x01" when trying to boot from a Slackware 96
bootfloppy that has sbpcd.s rawrite'd onto it.  The error message comes after I
press Enter from the prompt and the screen looks like this:

boot:
Loading ramdisk
block move error 0x01
boot: ramdisk
block move error 0x01
boot: ramdisk
[etc...]

The system sits there until I press Enter and then keeps getting the same error.
The hardware is an Intel Pentium-S 75 with Award BIOS 4.5G, PCI motherboard with
onboard IDE.  I get the same error when I disable the onboard IDE using the CMOS
setup utility and connect an IDE board in a 16bit ISA slot to the 1.44MB floppy
drive.

PART 2
I disabled the CPU internal cache and got further into the installation.  I
selected to install sets "a ap d f k" from my CD, proceeded to install them and
then made a boot disk from the bootkernel floppy.  The last step was to reboot
from the new boot floppy by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del.  The subsequent screen looks
like this:

                     Award Software, Inc.
                    System Configurations

CPU Type      : PENTIUM-S          Base Memory      :    640K
Co-Processor  : Installed          Extended Memory  :  15360K

Hard Disk Drive D: None
Hard Disk Drive E: None
Hard Disk Drive F: None

crc error

-- System halted

Is the Pentium75 incompatible with Linux?
What other information do you need to diagnose the problem?
Suggestions?

Slack96 boot: "block move error 0x01", CRC error

You might want to try to re-compile the kernel with the DRAM settings
turned down to X-4-4-4 for read and X-4-4-4 for write. This CRC error was
probably happening during the compilation.

If I could boot into Linux I might try that.  I tried the sbpcd.s bootkernels
from the CD-ROM and a newer one off the ftp site.  Are you saying the Slackware
distribution is flawed?

1. Linux boot error "crc error, system halted"

I have been getting a wierd error lately that seems pretty consistent. If
I type 'reboot' to restart linux after a session, the error comes up and
I must do a cold boot. When I cold boot, it works fine.

I have kernel version 1.2.0 and am running on an Intel DX4/100 machine.
Interestingly enough, I just recently upgraded to this motherboard from
an Intel 386/33 MB, where the problem never occured. I also recompiled
the kernel now to support 486 instruction set as well as math support,
but the problem is still consistent.

Any ideas?????

2. editing a string

3. Won't boot from boot disk - "crc error"

4. Why do segmentation faults occur?

5. bootdisk "crc error" or "invalid compressed format"?

6. Can access WAN but not LAN or self

7. "crc error" Booting Slackware 3.3

8. vi Editor and Shell

9. Help: "crc error" on boot.

10. get "crc error" when booting

11. "crc error --system halted" booting from floppy with AMD 486DX4/120
