Chinon CDS-535 CD-ROM/Sound Blaster 16 SCSI-2 Mount problems

Post by Carter T. Whi » Thu, 13 Jul 1995 04:00:00

Hi all:

I am having problems with getting Linux (1.2.11) to mount a
Chinon CDS-535 CD-ROM attached to a Sound Blaster 16 SCSI-2 card.

1.   Is such a hardware combination supported by Linux--that is, has anyone
gotten such a combination to work? (If so, I would much appreciate
      knowing how.)

2.   Any solutions/suggestions/hints would be most welcomed.

3.   Please send replies to wh...@alchemy.nrl.navy.mil (I'll post a summary if
     one is appropriate.)

4.   Some pertinent information regarding my problem is given below.

MANY THANKS
CARTER

Some background info:

I have a Sound Blaster 16 SCSI-2 card with a Chinon CDS-535 CD-ROM attached.
This  combination works fine in MSDOS using the Adaptec EZ-SCSI software
supplied with the Sound Blaster card.  At boot in MSDOS the ASPI
Manager etc. reports:

INFO FROM LINUX:

Last week installed Linux/slackware distribution (1.2.8) downloaded from
ftp.cc.gatech.edu. Subsequently I upgraded to 1.2.11 using source
also downloaded from ftp.cc.gatech.edu.  Because my host adapter does not
have an installed BIOS I force detection of the card using the override:
aha152x=0x340,11,7,1. As you can see from the messages issued at boot time
(copy below) the adapter is detected as is the CD-ROM with SCSI id 4 which
is correct.  However, as you can also see the CD-ROM is not successfully
mounted and after a lot of thrashing around eventually gives up.  Attempts
to mount manually also do not work.

1. Problem with PAS 16 & Chinon CDS-535 CD-ROM Drive

I cannont boot Linux with the SCSI driver for the ProAudio Spectrum 16
enabled.  It hangs up right after detecting the Chinon CDS-535 CD-ROM drive
attached to the PAS 16.  It says something about "reseting for retries".
First of all, what is going wrong?  Second, given a kernel compiled (because
right now I don't have the memory/time to recompile) with the driver in it, is
there a way I can just disable the driver with an option through LILO?  I
don't need the CD drive enabled right now, I don't have anything real
important on CDs (yet!).

Please email any replies if possible (maybe post too if you want), because I
can't keep up with the volume of this newsgroup.  Thanks!
