HP 820C Printer and Rhat Linux 7.1

HP 820C Printer and Rhat Linux 7.1

Dear gentle listener,

I have used my HP 820C printer under previous Redhat distributions of Linux, by
using pbm2ppa.  The printer is currently not detected during installation, and
indeed, when I run "detect_ppa", I am informed that the kernel is not
configured to determine whether there are any ppa devices.  I don't remember
whether the printer was automatically detected by the earlier distributions.
Question:  Does this mean that I can't add my printer???

Whenever I use:  /dev/lp0 (or lp1, lp2), I am given the warning "No such
device or address."   I'm not sure whether I should be using printtool or
not..since it doesn't seem to work.  Does that  program have far reaching
effects?  Do I need to dismantle it?

The bottom line is the printer doesn't seem to work on Redhat LInux7.1--but it
did on version 5.2 say.  Any suggestions?    Thank you, Bill

Are you sure that the parallel port modules have been inserted?

# lsmod

parport should be one of them; I don't know all of them because as soon as
I install, I build a custom kernel with the parallel port drivers in the
kernel.

1. HP Laserjet 5L Printer Driver on Linux 7.1

Hello,
I have updated to RedHat Linux 7.1, I previously used RedHat 6.2.
Under 6.2 I used the printer driver for the laserjet 4L and it worked
perfectly.  When I upgraded I noticed that there was a driver for the
laserjet 5L and tried it, but my printer just output pages of what
appeared to be the printer language.  So I tried the laserjet 4L
driver again, and while it worked somewhat it was flaky and long jobs
had to be done a few pages at a time using ghostview (By the way, does
anyone know what happened to the -pp option on lpr?  Or am I thinking
of lpr on some other OS?)  So recently I tried to install the laserjet
5L printer driver again.  It worked wonderfully for a day.  I was able
to print everything I sent to the printer.  Unfortunately, after I
rebooted it no longer worked, and is now printing HP printing language
and various symbols again.  Can anyone help me with this problem?
Thank you,

Shawn Young
