Warning: Red Hat 6.0 upgrade affects trn -> Pnews -> inews

Post by Donald C. Linds » Mon, 24 May 1999 04:00:00

Posting to Usenet via "trn" causes execution of /usr/lib/news/inews.

Red Hat 5.2 provides inews-1.7.2-14.i386.rpm which provides that.

Red hat 6.0 provides inews-2.2-8.i386.rpm which doesn't. So, when
you post, you get the message

Solution: use the old inews, or use inews-2.2-1.i386.rpm (which I have
on a "RH6.0 Contrib" from LSL).

1. Red Hat Upgrade 6.0->6.1 still failing.

I made a boot floppy from the latest images on the Red Hat servers, got
that written to disk and booted from it.  I still get the same errors.

I am attempting to upgrade my current 6.0 installation, and here is what
comes in a console during a GUI installation:

File "/usr/lib/python1.5/site-packages/gtk.py", line 128, in __call__
ret = apply(self.func,a )
File "/usr/lib/python1.5-sitepackages/iw/examine.py", line 18, in
getNext self.todo.upgradeFindPackages (self.root)
File "/usr/lib/python1.5/site-packages/todo.py", line 1155, in
upgradeFindPackages packages = rpm.findUpgradeSet (self.hdList.hdlist,
self.instPath)
rpm.error: error during upgrade check

Text upgrade is pretty much the same, just the lead-in is different.
But it gets to the todo.py line and it's the same from there on.

If I hit ^c during the GUI upgrade on the console window I get:

Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:32

In text mode the next time, I peeked around confirmed that
/proc/partitions had indeed noticed my partitions, but df showed none of
my drives to be mounted.  I'm not sure if they should be or not!

This is silly, and I'm damn glad I didn't BUY the 6.1 CD!

Thanks for any help!
