Homepage can be searched from yahoo search engine

Dear all,

It's very powerful to search webpage from yahoo search engine.   I would
like to know the underlying mechanism. It is because, it's very strange that
we can search our website with a brief introduction from such search engine
only several months after we build it without any connection to Yahoo
organization. We have not yet added any head tags such as keywords ,
descriptions to the webpage's heading. How is such brief
introduction extracted then?  How can our webpage be placed effectively in
search engines worldwide such as Yahoo, Google? Can the webpage at virtual
host of the Apache server be found in Search engine?

Thanks
Simon

This is off-topic here.

Wrong newsgroup Simon.

Please ask on a web-placement or search engine newsgroup.

Web placement has nothing to do with Apache I'm afraid

Do you know of any such NGs, CJ?

I've looked in the past and found nothing - following your post I tried
another search on my ISP's server and found only one that had any posts and
they were: 3 ads ( 2 sex), 1 single line peon to Google and someone wanting
to know which were the most popular search words (I guess he would have
found a clue in the topics in the NG)

I'd much appreciate any suggestions, (already subscribe to
searchenginewatch).

Cheers

They look for new pages and index them. You do not have to do a
thing.

I recomment adding keywords and description, and using standard
HTML.  It makes your pages show up more accurately on searches.

see searchenginewatch.com for information.

A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort.

you have to manually add your site into Yahoo's search engine, once you
submit the request, one of the yahoo people will take a look at your web
site, and their spider will start to search your web site.
With Goolgle, everything is automatic, they don't manually pick the site
but using the spider only.
With both Yahoo and Google, they have gave up Meta Tag searching already.
If you want to learn more about search engine, go to Matt Script
Archieve, and download Matt's search engine cgi, and test it out.

I suggest you add your site to dmoz.org Once it is listed there it will
appear on google. Just a tip.

- What is your search engine ranking? Do you need to provide high quality
search engine ranking report to your clients or to your boss?

it should be a cgi-script (perl, shell, c, ..) that performs the following:

on a html-page i should enter a searchstring (username, real name, first name)
then the script should run over the password-file (via yp), and look for the
searchstring and then provide an output like

User homepage search results:

where as 'Peter Wyder' should be a href to the homepage and the email-address
a mailto:-href ...

where can it get such a script..??
