formatting ext2

Post by Ben Do » Sun, 31 Dec 1899 09:00:00

Just so I make things clear to anybody who may feel inclined to point
this out to me, yes, I know I'm an idiot.  To continue.
I accidentally formatted my secondary ext2 partition (which contained
several gigabytes of mp3s and other more easily replaced files).  I've
looked around on the web for utilities to fix this, and all I've been
able to find are undeletion utilities, which pretty much all require an
intact inode table (which I no longer have, since mke2fs is pretty
unforgiving).  Does anybody have any ideas (short of manual raw editing
using dd; too many files)?

Thanks.

'Fraid you're out of luck, pardner. Sure hope you backed up, first.

1. Windows wants to format ext2 partition

I have a dual-boot system with Windows '98 on /dev/hda1 and Mandrake 9.0 on
/dev/hda5-10.  Partition hda11 is formatted ext2, but for a time it was
formatted vfat, as it is spare at the moment, and I thought that I would do
a fresh install of Windows and use /dev/hda11 as a temporary backup.

Windows now sees the partition as Drive D: and keeps wanting to format it.
How do I make it invisible to Windows?

Thanks,

Doug.
