Hello,
I just installed Linux a few days ago on my PC. I heard about
X-Windows, which is apparently a GUI facelift for Linux, how big is it
and where can i find it for download (if available freely), also, a more
detailed description on exactly what it is would be appreciated.

tia,
        Raj.

ps - please mail replies also.

Simply, it puts windows up on your screen, a window-manager is needed
as I wouldn't recommend using TWM that's included, there is xview-3.2
(openlook), fvwm and I use the 95-look fvwm2-95, you can find a
selection of these on sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/X11/window-managers. The
XFree86 binaries and documentation is to be found at ftp.XFree86.org or
ftp.rge.com. size about 10 Meg to download.

You have one of a few options.  1) Install XFree86.  It's somewhat of
a pain to install since you have to make the config file yourself, but
once you've got it working, you can definitely say that you've learned
a few things about your system.  2) Buy one of the two commercial
X-servers, Accelerated-X or Metro-X.  The advantage is minimal
headaches in setup.

As to where to find it.  If you used a CD to install Linux, it
should be on there too.  For help in installing/configuring, check
comp.os.linux.answers for the HOWTO's or visit our website (see
the signature below).

1. X-windows in Windows 95 and type writers in X-windows

Hello!

I have 3 questions about X-windows:

Is there a good graphical bases typewriter (not editor) in which
i can write and layout text in x-windows, without using a bunch
of codes as in e.g. latech.

Is it possible to make a telnet like connection in a MS windows
based PC to a unix machine which is capable to run the X-windows
system. So i could use for example Xmaple when I am sitting home
where i dont have unix, but I do have a fast pc and internet.

Is there a special X-windows newsgroup?

Please e-mail me because i cant read the newsgroups so often.

thanks
