Package Management Utility

Package Management Utility

Post by Jon Stearl » Tue, 21 May 1996 04:00:00

The RedHat Package Manager (RPM) is really nice,  I could really use
something similar on some other architectures (Sun/Solaris, DEC, SGI, ...)!

Does anyone out there know of a general unix package management utility -
something that keeps track of who installed what, when, where, notes, etc?

Thanks.

I'm not sure they provide source, but I heard RedHat encourage people to
use their RPM to add more packages.

Another option is the Debian distribution, which also provides all this
funcionality (though just yesterday I got around to finish installing it,
so I'm not yet in a position to give a good evaluation on, but I like it
very much so far).

Cheers,

1. Question about CMU's depot software management utility

Not too long ago, someone posted a message to this group, I believe,
concerning a utility called depot.  It comes from Carnegie Mellon
University.  Would this individual mind mailing to me.  I would like
to see how this product is being used.

I'm particularly concerned how gcc and libg++ are installed.  If they
are installed as separate collections, how does gcc find libg++?  Or,
for the sake of convenience, should these items be considered as one
collection?
