question about kernel compiling

Post by Joonshik Ki » Thu, 19 Sep 2002 17:02:02

Hi, I just begin to learn how to compile kernels.  I think I fininshed all
the process from the documents from internet.

I was using SuSe 8.0, with kernel 2.4.18 and was exercising kernel compiling
by downloaded "linux-2.3.8.tar.gz" file

after compiling, I updated the lilo.conf file and rebooted but following
message appears, what did I do wrong ?  Could anybody know this can help me
?  the messages are like this.

"warning: unable to open an initial console"
"kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init = open to kernel"

question about kernel compiling

i am not sure you want to run 2.3.8 kernel.

but possible causes of your problem could be that it does not find
your / partition or it does not know where the startup scripts are.
chances are you could have had journaling filesystem that 2.3.x is not
aware of or you forgot to compile in the support for either fs or your
hard drives into the kernel.
good luck

i have to ask this silly question: if you're using suse 8.0
with the 2.4.18 kernel, WHY IN THE WORLD are you trying to
build/use a 2.3.8 kernel ?!??!?!??!?!  you're going BACKWARDS

At first, start with a regular kernel like 2.4.19, you get it from
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4/
SuSE 8.0 runs fine with it. The odd-numbered kernels (2.3.x, 2.5.x)
are developer kernels, they are not for normal use.

SuSE tends to default to reiserfs on install...
Looks to me like he didn't patch the kernel he downloaded with reiserfs.

Trust me andrey, you're better off downloading a new kernel rather than an
old development one. (Very old development one)

Get 2.4.19... Or if you DO want to play with a development one, get the
latest 2.5.x.

Make sure you compile reiserfs (under section filesystem) into the kernel,
not as a module.

Exactly.

1. Stupid question about kernel compile

Hi All;

Well after playing with Linux for a couple of years I'm going to brake down
and recompile the kernel.
Now I've been using RHs binary RPMs and I'd like to know what options they
use durring the configure.  I only need to add a patch and the xconfiure
asks many questions.  I'd like to know what are the present options.  I
looked in /usr/src/linux and I didn't see a .configure file.  I think I know
what I'm doing here but I still would like to see the present config as an
example.  Or am I being too conservative?
