Rebuilding Kernel and Network Modules

Rebuilding Kernel and Network Modules

Post by Richard Corde » Sat, 28 Jul 2001 20:29:11

After installing slackware 8.0 on my laptop (Inspiron 7000),
I decided to add apm support to the kernel. (Kernel 2.2.19)

Currently, all I've done is built the source (taken from the
slackware distribution) and created a bzdisk. (i.e. I have
not added the apm support yet).  I am not re-building
the modules as I presume that they are built for the same
version of the kernel?  Is this true?

Booting from this new kernel does not correctly load
the PCMCIA network card.  However, the device driver
still loads correctly when I boot from the original
installation kernel.

The message I get is:

*cardmgr[50]: bind '3c575_cb' to socket 1 failed:
        Operation not permitted*

Any help much appreciated.

Richard

Certain features of modules may depend on configuration settings like APM,
so it would be safer to recompile modules, too.  Also ...

PCMCIA support in 2.2.* does not come with the kernel itself.  You need to
get the module code from the pcmcia-cs package.

Rebuilding Kernel and Network Modules

Sorry Paul, I just realised I replied to you directly...

The build I'm currently using is the default configuration as shipped with
the slackware distribution...i.e. I have not added APM yet.

I unsure if this is the problem as the original kernel still correctly
loads the PCMCIA network driver.

Thanks again,

Richard

1. Rebuilt kernel, can't find DAC960 module

Hi all,

I have a PII SMP system running RedHat 6.2.  I have two logical drives
created from a Mylex DAC960 controller.

The RedHat install recognised the controller, and I'm actually booting
from the logical drive.  I assume this is handled by the kernel loading
a ramdisk to hold the appropriate modules (that initrd= line in lilo,
right?), which mount the appropriate filesystems, and everything is go.

I want to rebuild my kernel now, but I'm confused on some points.
First, can't I include the DAC960 module directly into the kernel so I
don't have to use a ramdisk?  I can't find the DAC960 listed in
menuconfig's SCSI drivers section.

Also, I've read the how-to about kernel rebuilds, but it doesn't mention
"make modules" and "make modules_install", but other people say they're
needed.  Do I need these steps?  What are they for?

When I do the build, I get errors like "Kernel Panic, CRC error" or
"Cannot load DAC960.o".  Why can't my new kernel find that module?  Any
suggestions?

Aaron
