HELP: Problem installing Redhat 4.1 using PCMCIA cd-rom drive

Post by Jim Perkin » Wed, 16 Apr 1997 04:00:00

I am trying to install Linux on a Sharp 3040 laptop using
the Redhat 4.1 cd and a Panasonic 4x KXL-740 PCMCIA cd-rom
drive.  The cd-rom drive works fine under win95.  I used
fips to repartition my hard drive so I have a 400 meg partition
available for Linux.  I made the boot floppy and the supplemental
boot floppy using rawrite.exe .  I booted using the boot floppy and
got to the screen which asks if PCMCIA support is needed.
I answered yes and put the supplemental floppy in the drive.
I then get a message that the PCMCIA probe failed.  What
do I do now?  I have the Redhat 4.1 users guide but it doesn't
discuss this problem.
Thanks,
Jim

I was told by one of my Linux types that the Panasonic PCMCIA card is
not supported. I guess what you could do is load everyting on a server
and NFS it (what ever that means!) Sorry, I was going to do it on a
ThinkPad 755cx with the KXL cd720, own seperate drive, told NO CAN DO!

Boy don't you just love technology?

The KXL-740 *is* supported, the KXL-720 is *not* supported.

If the PCMCIA controller probe failed, then you have another problem,
since the drivers haven't even looked to see what card you've got
yet.  I think Red Hat has a patched set of install disks that will
find a larger set of PCMCIA controllers than the 4.1 disks.  You'll
have to talk to them about it.

1. Redhat 4.1 install - Sony CDU31A CD-ROM problems - HELP

I am trying to install Redhat 4.1/Intel Linux from CD-ROM.
I am using the Boot floppy that came with the shrink wrap box.
I selected Local CD-ROM and tried the following parameters,
   cdu31a=0x340,0
as mentioned in the users guide. The format is,
   cdu31a=base_addr,[irq-0][,PAS]
The guide says, use zero for IRQ is there is none used (page 155).

The Sony CDU31A CD-ROM is connected to a serial card in the motherboard.
The device manager in Windows 95 shows I/O range 0340-0343.
No IRQ is specified. My computer is a Gateway 2000 486 DX2 66.

It is 2 days since I requested for support from redhat and no replies
yet.
