RedHat 3.0.3 install problem

RedHat 3.0.3 install problem

Post by Michael Kre » Mon, 29 Jul 1996 04:00:00

Hi!

I was trying to install the RedHat 3.0.3 distribution on a friend's
machine (It runs perfectly on mine ;-) ).
The installation failed while booting :-(( .

Can anyone help ? - Thank you.

The configuration:
386/40, 4MB, mitsumi fx400

From the cdrom he used:
\images\1213\boot0000.img (I think that's the proper one for this cofig.)
\images\ramdisk1.img
\images\ramdisk2.img

Kernel parameters:
linux hdc=cdrom

The messages at boot time say (my comments enclosed in <brackets>):
...<some msgs>
hdc: fx400_02, ATAPI, CDROM drive
<looks good, the fx400 detected on secondary as master; it's jumpered as master>
hdc: irq probe failed (-7)
<looks ?>

ide1: secondary interface on irq 15
ide0: primary interface on irq 14
floppy drive(s): fd0 is 1.44M, fd1 is 1.2M
...<some msgs>

vfs: insert ramdisk floppy and press enter
<I insert 1st floppy>

vfs: disk change detected on device 2/0

done
vfs: mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
ramdisk2: unable to get 1474560 bytes
<looks bad, maybe 4MB is not enough? shouldn't be the reason!>

ramdisk2: initialization failed
initialization of ramdisk-1.2 failed

<Anyways, I insert 2nd floppy>

Okay, you're a linux user, so think about things a bit.  Your
kernel takes a little over 1M of RAM.  You're trying to load
the kernel and then *two* ramdisks into memory.  Each ramdisk
is 1.44M in size.  Total, just about exactly 4M.  While in
theory it maybe should just barely load the ramdisks, it wouldn't
have the space available to *run* anything.

You can not do a three floppy install on a 4M machine.  You
can try a single floppy install, however.  I have seen lots
of problems with the Mitsumi FX400 drives, so your mileage may
vary.
