I ran into a similar problem on a Dell green monitor.  The easy fix is to
disable the powersave feature(?) on the monitor.  It should be documented in
your monitor manual.

I am not sure that is a good solution.
The Sony 15sf seems to *drop* into powersave when the refresh rates are
not
supported by the monitor.
I would advise you to re-read your XFConfig file, check that X is using
the right XF86Config file and check the frequence in the documentation.
Otherwise, I did not manage to get it to work in 1280x1024 in 60Hz (as
said it should work) even if it is working under windoz.

Well, I have (finally) beaten it into working at 640x480.  As you can
imagine, this doesn't cut it.  I'll keep on working with it, but thanks
for the suggestions.

the problem is most likely in your config file; set up multiple screens,
at least one of which is just a plain-vanilla (vesa) 640x480 mode. then
use ctrl-alt-+ to switch between them. if at least one screen comes up, that's
a pretty good indicator that you have your modeline screwed up.

re not being able to get your monitor to do 1280x1024: my monitor (sony
cpd-1425) drops if the image is too wide. you might try increasing the last
number on your horizontal numbers row.

Good advice.

I do run my sony 15sf in 1280x1024 at 60hz with an Ati Mach32 GUP board.

DANGER ! be very careful with this, my 17sf protects itself this way when
the sync is out of the allowed range.
