Yes, there are a few brave souls out there that have tried it, but I'd read
this article from slashdot first...

or see

Win98 and Linux

Until I can setup Linux to burn (write) with this CD-Writer, I have
considerable data which I have to use NT with the Adaptec software
to archive files.  These files typically have long file names.

From the NT/Adaptec software, I've created both ISO-9960 & Joilet CD's.
But when reading from Linux, I only see the (DOS) 8.3 names.

When mounting the CD's with Linux, I could only find type IS0-9960
and not a JOILET type.  I could mount a "burned" JOILET CD with
type ISO-9960, but it still had only 8.3 names. Both had valid data.

I'm confused.  What options should I use with the NT Adaptec software
to burn CD's that will have the long file names for Linux.

Thanks,
Donovan Wade

Your simplest solution is to get ahold of a Linux kernel that can
understand Joliet.  2.0.34 and recent 2.1.x kernels fit that bill; or you
can patch earlier kernels with a patch file available from
http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/people/chaffee/.

If you want to be able to read these long filenames on any random Linux
(or other Unix) box, your best bet is to use mkisofs or mkhybrid on WinNT
to create a CD image file, and then to burn that with your Adaptec
software.  (If this is Easy CD Creator 3.00, you'll need an upgrade to
3.01 or above; this is available for free from Adaptec's web site.)  I've
got a link to mkisofs for Win32 on my web page at
http://www.users.fast.net/~rodsmith/rhjol.html, or one of the pages
directly under it.  mkhybrid can be obtained from
http://www.ps.ucl.ac.uk/~jcpearso/mkhybrid.html.

I  upgraded win3.11 to win98 and ran the Fat32 converter on the win
side.  I have
a p5-75 with a 4.3g hd.  No conflicts or problems. windoze respected the
linux partition
and ignored it.  I had been using a floppy with loadlin to boot into
linux and it still worked
afterwards.  Ironically, today I upgraded to Redhat 5.1 and enabled
lilo.  Windows, Linux
options at bootup.  Life is good.

Now I need to reconfigure all of the customizations I lost from redhat
4.2 to 5.1!

That's why you should backup those few things that sit
on root that might be particular to your installation.
Then you can just plain reformat your root partition &
completely reinstall if you want to with no ill effect.

Hardly. Microsoft has brought the microcomputer OS to
the point where it is more bloated than even OSes from          |||
what was previously larger classes of machines altogether.     / | \
This is perhaps Bill's single greatest accomplishment.

As far as I know, there are no conflicts using Win 98 and Linux red hat
5.1... If you encounter any problem, perhaps that's due to the partitions
on your hard drive...

A little note, nevertheless : Linux swaps can't be larger than 127 Mo
yet...

Once you install System Commander, you still can boot on your linux
partition... And Dos isn't required for all of this to work...

Bill's honor is safe... For this time (and only this time :)....)

1. Win98 can ping Linux, but Linux can't ping Win98 box

I'm having a strange problem.  I have a small LAN set up with a Win98 box
and a SuSE 7.1 box set up connected through a D-Link hub.  I have a cable
modem that goes straight to a DEC ethernet card in the Win98 box.  I have a
second ethernet card, a 3c509 in the Windows box that goes straight to the
hub.  Now I can ping my linux box, I can ssh into it (I can't telnet for
some reason, must be SuSE).  The linux box can't even ping the Win98 box.
The card in the Linux box is a 3c509b.  I'm pretty sure it's properly
configured.  Can someone give me a hint here, please.  Thanks a lot.
